MAMOU, La. (KADN) — A $5,000 reward is being offered for information about a whooping crane that was shot to death in Mamou.

Officials with the US Fish and Wildlife Service said a young whooping crane was found dead in a pond along Besi Lane on January 9 and a necropsy determined it had been shot.

Whooping cranes are on the endangered species list and it is illegal to harm them in any way. They are also protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and Louisiana state law.

The reward offered is for information leading to the arrest or criminal conviction of those involved.

Anyone with information about the bird is asked to call the US Fish and Wildlife Service at 985-882-3756 or the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Lake Charles Office at 1-337-491-2588.

Callers may remain anonymous.
