Lafayette, La (KADN)-Â Mayor-President Josh Guillory returned Friday after announcing three weeks ago he would be entering himself into rehab. Since resident have raised questions about his competence to serve the city and parish.
Lafayette resident Keith Faulk says under the charter, if the mayor-president is unavailable for more than 48 hours, a council member is supposed to be appointed..., which never happened.
"Those provisions need to be followed, and if we not going to follow those provisions well, then civilians will think they don't have to obey the court of the ordinance," says Faulk.
For Nick Reparr, he says when going to rehab, a person should be focused on getting better rather than other duties. While he wishes the mayor-president the best, he's not sure if three weeks was enough time to heal with everything on his plate.
"I would think that rehab would take longer than three weeks to get through any major issues. You always hear about people relapsing. So hopefully, he will keep on going but with help," says Reparr.
However, Faulk doesn't believe the mayor-president has ever been transparent with the community. "People have submitted public requests, but it takes them almost two years, six months to fulfill those requests. When they do fulfill it, half the information they ask for is left out."
With the Mayor-President returning to work Monday, a second chance is what Justin Randolph believes anyone should be given. "It really depends what they have done and how they go about redeeming themselves for that second chance."
Now the Lafayette Consolidated Government meeting is currently going on. Still, residents are expecting to use their three minutes to speak to voice their concerns about Guillory stepping down as mayor-president.
NEWS15 reached out to Lafayette Consolidated Government, who says the Mayor-President has absolutely zero intention of resigning. Mayor-President Guillory intends to continue doing the hard work he was elected to do.
