Acadiana(KADN)- Louisiana Department Of Health has released water system grades for the entire state for residents to learn more about the quality of their water system.
Opelousas and Arnaudville are communities whose water systems received a failing grade from the State Health Department.
"Would you want to give your child a bath in water like that?'
Water system grades are in roughly nine percent of them in Acadiana scored high while others failed and received a D or F.
State Senator Fred Mills of New Iberia helped pass a law last year requiring the Louisiana Department Of Health to post water system letter grades for the public to see. "If you lived in a community with an F or D rated water system, you should ask your elected officials and the folks that you work within the area why the water quality is what it is."
"It was always brown or had some type of rust in it or bacteria," says Opelousas resident Elizabeth August.
August lives in a city that received an F. Living there since 2011 she says, water problems have been constant for her family. "I have a husband that works his tail off for everything that we have. For him to take a shower at the least he should be able to take a shower and feel clean. Not having to get out of the shower and still feel oily or dirty."
Although for customers dealing with private water companies, it's even harder trying to get sustainable drinking water.
For years United Water System customers have been fighting for clean water in st. Martin parish as they also received an F.
One customer says they get constant letters in the mail about the company's failed LDH regulations. "Every so often they send a letter basically saying their water failed a test and it's not safe but it's not going to kill you."
Both asking for the same thing from their water company.
"Don't make us live with this water."
"It doesn't make sense that we pay for all this and our kids can't even have a clean bath at night or water to drink out of."
NEWS15 reached out to United Water System and received no response. The mayor of Opelousas says they are working hard to address the problems so their next letter grade will be much higher.
