After massive fire, Scott Fire Chief take preventions for homeowners

A homeowner is displaced massive fire leaving the uninhabitable.

UPDATE: Scott Fire Chief tells NEWS15 that a faulty extension cord is to blame for igniting the blaze.

Scott,La(KADN)- A homeowner is displaced massive fire leaving the uninhabitable.

Scott Fire Chief Chad Sonnier says the situation could have gone another way if not for someone passing by. "The owner was extremely fortunate that it happen when it did in the middle of the day when someone actually saw the fire and was able to wake her up. If it would have been at night when everybody was sleeping, I think it would have been a lot of different circumstances."

The faint smell of smoke is still in the air, as it took more than six hours to put the fire out.

Why so much time? The objects that you are seeing were all in the house creating obstacles for the firefighters to get in and put out the fire.

Sonnier says though that wasn't the only reason. "We had a lot of unordinary things not typically inside of a home that hindered our efforts. This house had a metal roof which keeps the heat inside of the home rather than letting it come out. We had a lot of wind gusts yesterday which was feeding the fire."

During their response, the roof began to collapse. With the number of tires, old antiques, and miscellaneous items inside the house, some would call this person a hoarder.

Sonnier reminds folks to be cautious of what's inside their home. "Firefighters don't know the layout of their homes. So we have to search through smoke and heat and whenever we have obstacles not typically in a home it kind of hinders us as far as getting inside and outside. Finding the seed of the problem and getting it out quickly."

An investigation into the exact cause of the fire is ongoing. One firefighter that was treated on the scene is okay and back on the job.
