LAFAYETTE, La. - Face shields were created in an effort to stop you from contracting COVID through your eyes, or atleast that was a theory.
"The only way your'e going to transmit COVID is through your respiratory secretions," said Simon.
Respiratory secretions come from your nose and mouth. Dr Larry Simon says face shields are effctive in preventing the spread of COVID but only for the other person, not you.
"If you had a wide enough barrier it will catch anything coming out of you. It's important to remember that it doesn't give you as much protection to yourself as a standard face mask would," said Simon.
That's because a face mask protect you from the inside and outside. Makayla luzier agrees but she prefers silk and cotton mask because she can wash them.
"The underneath area is silk. I like wearing it because it really helps with preventing acne since it's silk and that's a big issue with the mask," said Luzier.
Anytime we cough, sneeze, talk or raise our voices without a mask on we could potentially be spreading covid.
"A symptomatic spread still exist, even if you are vaccinated. This is a cloth mask, I chose this one because it has two layers where I can fit an actual filter between, like the surgical filters," said Darbonne.
Dr. Simon says there is some concern about fomite transmission.
"Someone sneezes or coughs onto a hard surface. Then you touch the hard surface," said Simon.
Then you touch your face or more commonly your eyes and contract the Coronavirus. That's why it's important to keep handsantizer and cleaning wipes nearby.
At the end day Simon recommends double masking with surgical mask or wearing N-95 mask for the best protection possible. Surgical mask can be found just about anywhere like your local walmart.
N-95 mask might be easier to find on Amazon but Simon says make sure you don't mistake them for a painters mask, they can look similar.
