Lafayette, LA (KADN) A statewide nursing shortage here in Louisiana met an aggressive response from UL and Ochsner health.
The UL board has approved an accelerated nursing program for students who have a bachelor’s degree.
This will allow students of this program to become a registered nurse in half the usual time.
"There continues to be a great demand and many health care institutions and nursing programs are looking at innovative ways to increase the workforce that's available to meet the needs of our patients,” said Lisa Broussard.
Once students get accepted, this is only a 15 month program that is fully funded by Ochsner Medical Center.
"So what this will do is enable people who have a bachelor's degree in any field other than nursing who want to be a nurse to be able to enroll in our program and complete our nursing program. Once they've completed their general education courses the nursing program will be completed in 15 months,” said Broussard.
After completing the course, students will have a guaranteed position with Ochsner Lafayette General.
"The nursing component of this program will be covered by Ochsner Lafayette general for their tuition, and then they'll have a work commitment to work at Ochsner Lafayette General upon completion of the program,” Broussard stated.
