Louisiana(KADN)- The full Senate will soon be hearing proposed changes to Louisiana's gun laws. Permitless concealed carry could soon be a reality in Louisiana, for gun owners 21 and older.
Those who oppose the bill believe it will cause a spike in gun violence across the state. But some disagree.
"Open carry in Louisiana is actually a constitutional right. I don't see where there is a difference if you already have the right to carry openly," says the President of the Louisiana Shooting Association Dan Zelenka.
It bears the question If this proposed bill could pose a threat to law enforcement in the state.
It's a concern that seems to get different responses.
"I think the constitution that was created by our four fathers gave us the right to bear arms and I really believe that should be allowed. I think we have a right to protect ourselves, our family, our neighbors, and our community," says Acadia Parish Sheriff KP Gibson.
The Lafayette Police Department thinks the legislation would certainly challenge law enforcement across the board...
However, they all believe having proper training is key.
"I'm supportive of it, but I will hope that there is some form of training. Whether it be online or you attend a class," says Sheriff Gibson.
"A lot of people already know how to shoot a firearm whether they have taken a class or not. I certainly encourage people to take a class they need,", says Zelenka.
A LPD spokesperson says "Without training provisions, you will have young adults and first-time owners having safety issues with a firearm ironically purchased to keep them safe."
As the bill heads to the full senate committee, supporters say the bill is consistent with the second amendment. Louisiana would be the 28th state to have similar laws in place.
