NEW ORLEANS (WWLTV) — Plagued with rats, roaches, no air conditioning, and broken elevators, the New Orleans Police Department Headquarters is decaying, so the city is looking for a new space where evidence is safe from rats.

"The rats eating our marijuana; they're all high,” said New Orleans Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick.

She said sometimes staff arrive at work and find rat droppings on their desks.

Council members have voted to approve the lease to rent a new building. Gilbert Montano, city chief administrative officer, said it's a 10-year lease and rent will be more than $670,000 annually.

He said to fix the current HQ will cost roughly $30 million, so renting a new place is a cheaper option.

The new building is on Poydras Street, right across from the Superdome. Staff will be based on the upper floors.

The plan is to get the keys on May 1.
