squatters were living in a home without water and light and the house burned down
Lafayette, La (KADN) An alleged Lafayette drug house on Omega Dr. went up in flames and a group of squatters were living there without power and water.
Hope Landry, who was a part of 6 squatters that LPD says were living in the home.
She claims the home was owned by her mother, Candace Landry. Although records reviewed by “News 15 investigates” found the home was foreclosed and utilities disconnected.
"I mean there were people living there, I'm not sure why or what their situations were. I know my mom likes to help as many people as she can," said Hope Landry.
Neighbors and police tell us some of the squatters regularly engaged in drug activity.
In fact, LPD records reviewed by “News 15 investigates”, shows officers responded to at least 20 calls in the past year at the home involving drugs. Also, during one of the police visits resulted in a drug arrest.
"I don't do drugs myself so, personally I wouldn't say. No comment", said Landry.
Landry was living in the home without utilities or water along with her two-year old daughter.
Also, one of the police calls reviewed by News 15, involved a child neglect complaint. When Landry’s child was reportedly found multiple blocks up the street.
“Because there were other roommates in the house I kind of became more reliant on them, and I left her downstairs in the living room with all the doors closed and within five minutes five minutes I came downstairs and I could not find her," said Landry.
Landry and her daughter are living with a friend and she says her mother is staying in a motel and doesn’t know where the others who were in the home.
