CARENCRO, La. (KADN) — The Carencro community is reacting to the senseless tragedy that claimed the life of a high school teen, as students returned to school with grief counselors and extra security on hand.

The motive for the murder is under investigation. But Only on News 15: video is now being looked at by investigators as potential evidence in the case.

Carencro High student Jaylin Joiner, 18, was gunned down while getting off a school bus on Bradford Drive right outside the city limits on Friday, March 1.

The Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office arrested Malikai Doucet, 19, on a charge of second-degree murder in connection with the deadly shooting. His bond is set at $350,000. Doucet is not a student at the school.

The murder has left the city of Carencro in shock and asking why it happened.

"It doesn't stop with just the victim or his family," said Chad Desormeaux, representative for District 2 of the Lafayette Parish School System. "It's obviously them and it's a bus driver and their families because it's going to affect that bus driver. It's going to affect the staff, the teachers that taught this kid, and it's going to affect the community itself."

Desormeaux represents the Carencro area. His children actually went to school with Joiner, and he said officials are trying to keep things as normal as possible this week at Carencro High.

"The kids already knew something was different by our presence for one; but two, we also have extra counselors there today. You have extra SROs roaming around today. So today, it's been a little different to where we're just being cautious," explained Desormeaux.

As part of their investigation into a motive for this killing, sheriff's investigators are currently reviewing video obtained by News 15 Investigates. It shows a previous shooting in Carencro and some residents believe Joiner's slaying may have been in retaliation for that incident.

"We are all devastated by the loss of Jaylin, a young man taken from us to soon to a senseless act of violence, gunned down on the school bus." said Thea Boudreaux, Joiner's grandmother, in an online post.

LPSO said the murder investigation is ongoing and more arrests are expected in the coming days.
