NEW IBERIA, La. -- Two teens were arrested in connection to the death of 23-year-old man.

New Iberia Police responded to the 1700 block of Jennifer Street on April 13 after receiving a report of an individual with a “self-inflicted” gunshot wound. Officers located the victim inside a residence with a single gunshot wound to the head. He was pronounced dead on scene.

Detectives conducted interviews and noted several inconsistencies in witness statements. Evidence on scene was not consistent with the statements provided according to police.

An autopsy was ordered the following day and determined the preliminary manner of death was ruled homicide. The investigation was continued and the witnesses were re-interviewed.

Detectives arrested a 17-year-old and 15-year-old in connection to the homicide.

The 17-year-old was charged with negligent homicide, illegal use of weapons, illegal possession of a handgun by juvenile, and possession of stolen firearms.

The 15-year-old was charged with accessory after the fact to negligent homicide.

Both juveniles were ordered to detention and transported to a detention center in Alabama.
